About Us

Checkmate was founded by Stephen C. Robinson, CPA, in 1994. After managing his accounting practice for over twelve years, Steve understood that there was a need for client-focused, cost-effective and accurate payroll services that understood and listened to the needs of the customer. There were large, national payroll companies available, but employers complained about impersonal service, excessive fees, poor quality and complicated reports. Steve's experience as a small business owner allowed him to truly understand these needs and provided the building blocks upon which Checkmate's vision was created.

Our fee schedule was designed to be affordable to all employers whether they have one employee or over 100. Each client is equally important regardless of its size. Checkmate has enjoyed consistent controlled growth over the years. Starting with 14 clients in 1994, Checkmate now provides payroll solutions to hundreds of employers throughout New England and the country.

Clients often provide referrals, which is the highest compliment a business can receive. Our loyal customers are partially responsible for our expansion throughout New Hampshire and New England.
